The impact of colour on lifestyle has been studied by Asian Paints ColourNext since 2003. They work with professionals from numerous creative disciplines to define design directions for colours, materials, textures, and finishes through the yearly ColourNext forecast. The study's objectives include tracking sociological changes in India and gathering information on consumption trends, lifestyle factors, and alterations in people's interests and preferences. The research team develops a forecast for the following year that transforms societal movements into an actual design direction through group discussions, expert interviews, trend workshops, and colour and material workshops.

Four major design trends for the year 2023 were presented in the India Design ColourNext forecast. For each of these trends, custom colour schemes, material sets, and textures and finishes were curated. The report contains transdisciplinary insight for anyone designing goods, places, or communication for the subcontinent thanks to an improved narrative of the directives and their application. Themes for 2023 include creating a better future, accepting our past and present, optimism, and intention. The four forecast design directions for 2023—Gothlicious, Shroom, Edge of the Forest, and Sleep Sense—reflect this feeling. Gothilicious encourages us to embrace the inherent darkness and revolutionises perception and self-expression. Deeper hues, rough and damaged surface textures, and vulnerable but evocative finishes are in the spotlight in this design. Neutrals are fading in popularity as darker, more gritty sentiments, a distinctive aesthetic, and a subtle gothic vibe takes their place.

Inspired by the form, texture, colour and consequently the aesthetic of mushrooms, Shroom represents innovation and revival. In many respects, these enormous, interwoven hyphae represent the past year itself as we emerge from seclusion after enduring the greatest health scare our generation has ever experienced.

Edge of the Forest reignites the connection between nature and human beings and utilises the knowledge, folktales, and artistic creations of our predecessors to build a superior future. Apart from the massive resource extraction and widespread ecological degradation, buildings and construction are responsible for more than a fourth of all greenhouse gas emissions. Building with organic, sustainable, and non-harmful materials is becoming more popular among homeowners, architects, and contractors in an effort to build a sustainable future for humanity.

Sleep Sense incorporates the traditional and indigenous elements of architecture and handicraft designs to evoke a calming and safe space where people can allow themselves to take some time for themselves. As a response against the hyper-productive and scarcity culture, a sleep revolution is gradually underway to allow people some guilt-free moments of safety and unwinding.
